"What were we doing there?
Would there be a musical term for such a musical theatre I would call it a Suite, thus a series or better: a succesion of performances with the option to change the series. As you know, once the Suite was a series of dances, a kind of light-footed entertainment, enjoyment, communication and the own activities. One danced the Suites and thereby experienced what they were. „Tender Buttons“ is like an „invitation to the dance“ and the poetical musical play a request for looking and listening.
Now I think it will be become clear that Gertrude Stein is a master of subtle entertainment, and when I said I always wanted to write the way she composes, I exactly meant that simplicity which involves so many detours...
„Avoid heaviness, think Fred Astaire“ I wrote at that time on a file-card and gave it to the others. That meant a lot at the same time: the sudden realization of the own work, finding one’s bearings and a sign to the others not to go off from the way of entertainment on this information level...“
